Christine M. Richter and Aloysius Wild Institut für Allgemeine Botanik der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität, Saarstraße 21, D-55099 Mainz, Bundesrepublik Deutschland Z. Naturforsch. 49c, 619-627 (1994); received January 31/June 16, 1994 Phenolic Compounds, Picea abies, Novel Forest Decline, Picein, Catechin The content of several phenolic compounds in needles of 20to 30-year-old Norway spruce trees (Picea abies) was measured using HPLC. The results of two forestry sites in middle western Germany are reported in this paper. They are part of a research programme on novel forest decline which was carried out in various regions of Germany. Distinct amounts of picein, catechin, piceatannol glucoside, and other phenolic compounds were detected in the studied spruce needles. Additionally, their contents changed in relation to damage. Some compounds, especially catechin, showed increased levels in the needles of the damaged trees compared to the undamaged ones. Here, the values for the undamaged trees of the different sites were similar. Concerning the changes in picein contents, however, there was a great difference between the sites. p-Hydroxyacetophenone was detected in very low amounts only and did not correlate with damage. These results are compared with earlier findings from another site that shows severe dam age. The role of phenolic compounds as indicators of tree damage is discussed.

Investigating the Signs of decline and its impact on the total phenolic compounds, flavonoids and protein of the leaves Quercus, brantii (Case Study: Lorestan province)

The phenomenon of Oak decline is one of worrying phenomena that has been occurred in Zagros forests, and the extent of the infected forest areas is spread increasingly. The present study aims to investigate the symptoms of Oak decline on the individuals and its effect on the secondary compounds of Quercus brantii leaves. For this purposes, three forest regions including Abolivafa, Miankouh and ...

Nutrient Dynamics and Decomposition rate of Norway Spruce Needles in Stråsan and Lajim stands

Climate changes due to changes in a habitat leads to differences in the rate of decomposition and nutrient dynamics of leaflitters, which has many effects on the controlling factors of the decomposition process. In the present study, the rate of decomposition and nutrient dynamics of Norway spruce was evaluated for 363 days in the two forestation sites in the natural and foreign habitats, ...

Characterization of glutathione S-transferases in needles of Norway spruce trees from a forest decline stand.

Glutathione S-transferases (GST) detoxify many electrophilic xenobiotics, including several volatile organic compounds and pesticides. The GST activity for the conjugation of several xenobiotic substances was isolated from needles of Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.) trees from a forest decline stand in the northern alps. Trees that exhibited different degrees of damage were selected from s...

Comparison of some Soil Physico-Chemical and Microbial Characteristics in Relation to Oak Decline in Different Elevation Classes in Southern Zagros Forest

The decline of trees has been raised as one of the main problems in arid and semi-arid regions. Understanding the type and extent of the relationships among different environmental factors – e.g. soil characteristics as the basis for growth and development of plant species - and natural disturbances can be facilitated the ways of sustainable forest management and a useful tool for monitoring th...

Effect of tree decline and slope aspect on the leaf morphological traits of Persian oak trees

This study was accomplished with the aim of investigating the effects of tree decline and slope aspect on leaf morphological traits and determining the indicator morphological traits that indicate the leaf diversity of Persian oak trees in relation to habitat conditions and environmental stresses in Mellah Siah forests of Ilam. Two forest habitats were selected on the northern and southern slop...
